The outermost island residents of Bintan Regency in the near future will enjoy the convenience of internet. A total of five islands have been built tower network from PT Telkom. Construction of those tower is scheduled for completion in mid 2018. Previously internet connection is very limited and strict to certain zones.
Bintan’s land area is stretched within 2,402.28 square kilometres (927.53 sq mi) (total area is 60,057 square kilometres (23,188 sq mi) including 96% sea area). The five islands are located in Tambelan and Bintan shoreline Subdistricts. The four islands of Pulau Pejantan, Pengikik, Mentebung and Pulau Pinang are in Tambelan. Another island again that is Mapur Island which is located in Bintan shoreline.
Head of the Village Community Empowerment Agency (PMD) of Bintan, Ronny Kartika, said the construction of five towers in the five islands is a strengthening of telecommunication network in Bintan. So far, the five islands have difficulty in accessing telecommunication. Good phone, short message let alone internet.
The island has beaches with beach-front hotels and resorts; the most prominent of these beaches is the Bintan Resorts set over an area of 300 hectares (740 acres) of tropical environment. The archipelago of the Riau islands is right opposite to this resort across the South China Sea. Indonesia is promoting Bintan as the next best tourist destination after Bali.
“Four islands in Tambelan actually already have Internet access from provider named Manggo Sky, but for mobile phone access is still difficult,” said Ronny.
The presence of the newly built tower is expected to facilitate telephone access for the community. The communication will also be very helpful in the field of shipping, especially for ships passing in these waters.
